Leaving the world of work for wellies, waterproofs and weeds!

Feb 23, 2016

Here at wnDirect we really believe in the power of positive thinking and like to think we go the extra mile (apologies for the nearly pun!) to create an inspirational environment and to give a little something back to the community.

As part of our wnVolunteering initiative, this Friday (26th February 2016) we plan to do just that and are taking a team of 20 wnDirect employees to volunteer at Thrive. Thrive is the UK's leading charity using gardening to change the lives of people living with disabilities or ill health, or who are isolated, disadvantaged or vulnerable.

Gardening is a flexible medium that can transform lives and Thrive sees first-hand how gardening can help everyone, regardless of age or disability. 'Social and therapeutic horticulture', as it is known, is the process of working with plants to improve physical and psychological health, and communication and thinking skills. It also uses the garden as a safe and secure place to develop someone's ability to mix socially, make friends and learn practical skills that will make them more independent. Using gardening tasks and the garden itself, Thrive horticultural therapists build a set of activities for each gardener to improve their particular health needs, and to work on certain goals they want to achieve.

Our volunteering team is made up from a mixture of individuals from across the business, all of whom have kindly volunteered their time on Friday to help this fantastic charity. They will be going along to Thrive's Trunkwell Garden Project in Reading and will spend the day getting stuck into varied and practical outdoor seasonal tasks such as digging, weeding, planting, strimming, mending fences, cutting back foliage, painting and sorting out sheds. At the moment, the weather forecast for Friday looks good with it expected to be dry and bright. But even if it does decide to rain that won't dampen our team's spirits. We hope they have a fun and rewarding day and look forward to hearing all about it.
