Reflecting on Black Friday 2015

Dec 18, 2015

After all the anticipation, Black Friday 2015 has come and gone. According to IMRG and Experian, the total spend for the 4-day Black Friday weekend reached a whopping £3.3bn this year.

This was clearly successful in some cases, with House of Fraser and New Look reporting that sales on the Thursday were actually higher than for Black Friday last year, apparently without impacting upon sales volumes for Black Friday this year. In addition, the majority of fashion retailers and parcel carriers emerged unscathed from post-Black Friday and Cyber Monday delivery delays that were witnessed last year.

Secondly, but not surprisingly, shoppers turned their backs on the high street and instead opted to grab their bargain’s online. In fact during November eCommerce claimed its largest share of the retail market since British Retail Consortium (BRC) records began, with one in every five pounds spent over the internet during the peak online Christmas shopping season. Shoppers spent £1.1bn online on Black Friday, 36% more than last year according to Experian-IMRG. Wow!

And, peak season isn’t even over yet… it is estimated that UK shoppers will spend £16bn on Christmas this year, £201m or 1.3% more than in 2014, according to a report by retail research firm Conlumino.

Bring it on!
